East Oakland Cyclist Dies After Hit-and-Run Accident

An East Oakland cyclist was killed in a serious hit-and-run accident last night according to KBCS News. The bicycle accident happened around 9:30 p.m. on International Boulevard near 81st Avenue.

Oakland Fire Department officials say that the cyclist was hit by a silver, late-model sedan which did not even attempt to stop after the collision despite having a broken windshield. The cyclist was dragged 100 feet by the vehicle and sustained catastrophic personal injuries. The Alameda County Coroner's Office told CBS San Francisco that the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are currently trying to confirm the identity of the cyclist, who was not carrying identification on him. Investigators are also determining whether any security cameras in the area caught this accident on tape.

This accident comes during a time in which tensions are rising between area cyclists, pedestrians and drivers. Several pedestrian-related bicycle accidents have grabbed headlines in the recent months, and the number of car-related bicycle accidents also remains far too high.

Cycling has become a popular form of transportation in the Bay Area in recent years especially among men. The average age of cyclists killed in bicycle accidents is 40, and the average age of injured cyclists is about 30.
